The easiest way to know where a satellite is standing relative to your position on earth, is to make use of tracking software. There are several software packages available that I will describe. JSatTrak is a Satellite tracking program written in Java. It allows you to predict the position of any satellite in real time or in the past or future. The program also allows for easy updating of current satellite tracking data via CelesTrak.

For one, a crapped out U. More recently, Eutelsat's W2M telecommunications satellite also failed in orbit shortly after launch, leaving it dead to space. Back in January , China tested its sharp-shooting anti-satellite skills by taking aim on its own one-ton meteorological satellite — resulting in a huge cloud of ominous clutter. A little over a year later, an errant American military classified satellite, USA, was aced out by a ship-to-space interceptor.
How to Operate Ham Radio via Satellite
Generally speaking, amateur ham radio transmissions are limited in range by the horizon. The curvature of the Earth blocks a signal from propagating beyond the horizon. In principle, with a tall antenna and enough power, ham radio users can communicate up to a few hundred miles. But in the case of satellite-based amateur radio systems, this issue is resolved by bouncing the radio signal off a satellite in orbit, and therefore sending the signal far over the horizon. How far exactly?
Just for fun, ham radio in Lego World. Thanks to Bob, K0NR, for the link to this video. This is a comprehensive guide to working ham radio satellites — from basic theory to tactical and practical. Tamir, N6JJ, has a bunch of other videos on his channel, too.
