Savory Still Lifes: skill in painting detailed textures and surfaces with realistic lighting.
I worked directly with Stanford Hughes of SOM who renovated the famed Palace Hotel in San Francisco just before the start of his own firm, Brayton Hughes Design Studios. My direction was completely open: produce four paintings; that was it. This was my first commission for a restaurant and I could only think of food. I suggested imagery from still lifes from the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th-century. I took this as my opportunity to work on my skill in painting textures and surfaces in great detail with realistic lighting effects. My models were specific portions of actual historic paintings that I faithfully reproduced at a slightly larger scale. Many of my commissions are a challenge for my creative and technical abilities and none more so that this one.
Materials: oil on canvas.
